Amorgos is a beautiful island of the Cycladic complex. It is located at the north east Aegean sea.

The island has the unique Cycladic architecture, small white houses with blue windows, spread all over the island, forming magnificent settlements under the Mediterranean sun.Comparing with the other Cycladic islands, Amorgos has higher mountain sites and deeper sea, which makes the landscape even more imposing.

There are three big settlements on the island, Katapola and Aegiali , the two harbors of the island and Chora which is the capital , built on the centre of the island , among the highest mountain sides, waiting for the traveler to discover its picturesque narrow streets and traditional coffee shops.

For the ones who love nature and a bit of adventure, Amorgos is the place to be, all over the island the city of Amorgos has reformed and semaphored the old paths which connect the settlements and will give an unforgettable trek through the mountains of the island. The paths divert in difficulty and distance, this way they can satisfy all trekkers, beginners and advanced.

For the ones who want to make something out of their summer nights, Amorgos will fulfil even the most demanding traveler with its night life being a great mixture of traditional coffee shops and modern bars.

Amorgos has to demonstrate a civilization of centuries old. Based on the excavations and the findings on the island, it seems that Amorgos had a flourishing civilization since the prehistoric times (3200 – 2000 B.C ). During ancient times the island flourished in commerce and merchant navy, having three different cities, Arkesini, Minoa and Aegiali, colonies of different countries, on the island. During Roman times the island was under the rule of the Romans. In the Byzantine period it didn’t have any important flourishing and until 1832 where it was included at the independent Greek country, it was ruled by different conquerors such as the Franks and the Turks.

Visitors will sure have more than enough to see when they visit the island, but they should not miss a visit at the monastery of Panagia Hosoviotissa. Built in 1088 dominates on the edge of a cliff, the monastery’s foundations are literally built inside the rock making the building, hanging on the cliff 300 meters above the sea. Also worth seeing, the two prehistoric cemeteries at Kapsala and Dokathismata and the ruins of the old Enetic castle right above Chora.

There are also plenty of beaches to enjoy the sun and dive into the big blue. The beach of Santa Anna right below the monastery, the beach of Mouros with the underwater caves, the beaches of Aegiali and Levrossos and many more waiting to be discovered by the travelers.
