Myconos Island
(85 sq. km in area; 94 nautical miles from Pireaus, 71 nautical miles from Rafina)
Myconos is one of the most beautiful and most visited islands in Greece. It’s the cosmopolitan center of Cyclades, if not of the whole Greece, as it attracts many thousands of visitors from all over the world, including artists, intellectuals and celebrities.
Myconos’s main harbour and capital, Hora (=which means the main area, the center), lies at the western coast of the island, and is one of the most scenic harbours in the Mediteranean. Along it’s narrow, cobblestone alleys and streets, stand the characteristic white, cubic-shaped houses, with their wooden, blue painted windows, doors and balkonies. From the first moment you step on the island you can see the unique sceeneries it has to offer: A harmoniuous combination of gray-green rocks, and beautiful, whitewahsed houses, small churches and windmills, portray a landscape unique to the Cyclades and especially Myconos.
While in Myconos, make sure you visit Little Venice or Alefkandra, a series of wooden galleried houses built right on the sea in the 17th century. Other places to visit are: Ano Mera, a village about 8 km to the east, where you’ll find the monastery of Panaya “Tourliani”, which was build in 1542, and the beautiful seaside resorts of Troulos and Aghios Stefanos, about 3-4 km to the north of Hora. There are even more seaside resorts, like Ornos and Platys Gialos, to the south, and Kalafatis, about 12 km distance from Hora to the eastern coast.
Museums: (In Hora) The Archaeological Museum (Tel. 22890 22325), the Aegean Maritime Museum (Tel. 22890 22591), the Folclore Museum (Tel. 22890 22591).
Beaches: Aghia Anna, Aghios Stefanos, Elia, Kalafatis, Ornos, Panormos, Platys Gialos, Psarou. Paradise and Super Paradise beaches are for nudists.
Sports: Water Sports.
Although Myconos is famous for it’s extreme night-life (besides it’s natural beauty), visitors seeking more day-time and peaceful holidays will still find quiet places for rest and relaxation.
